The Nun (2018)

In theaters: The Nun (2018)

Just in case we needed any more proof that an Ed and Lorraine Warren cinematic universe is the sort of thing you get when you sell your soul, along comes Corin Hardy’s The Nun (2018). It’s gaudy, loud, tacky, and dumb in a way that The Conjuring movies aren’t (quite) but that it seems to believe that its audience is.

There isn’t much of a story to speak of, but you do get a very good idea about just how much and what kind of horror that the studio has determined that the mass market demands: an endless, meaningless string of occurrences of the exact same James Wan-branded jump scare to watch, or not, as you talk through the movie and gorge yourself on a tub of popcorn. Taissa Farmiga stars as the good nun (not the titular demon in nun form), and yes, it’s distracting that her sister Vera plays Lorraine in the franchise’s flagships.
