During a romantic anniversary wilderness getaway, a married couple learns that opposites do attract when one of them (Hannah Emily Anderson) outs herself as a homicidal maniac, with the other (Brittany Allen) as her codependent latest intended victim. And it all comes out on the first full day, which really ruins the weekend for both of them. This is the premise of What Keeps You Alive (2018).
That the couple are lesbians has no bearing at all for writer/director Colin Minihan, except for one awkward, unnecessary mention, so bravo on the film for making that kind of progress. The acting isn’t bad, and likewise the photography, and you’ll never once guess where the story is going, but only because it confounds credibility. The victim makes a slasher movie’s worth of dumb victim mistakes, all by herself, without any prompting, although, in all fairness, so does the killer. And if you’re wondering why the victim isn’t fighting back, it’s because it isn’t the third act yet.
